SEATTLE -- Randy Arozarena had just one at-bat but he made the most of it, drilling
a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning to win MVP honors as the American
League beat the National League 7-4 in the 18th annual CFA All-Star Game.
But we're getting ahead of ourselves. After CFA Mariners legends Johan Santana and
Paul Konerko threw out the first pitches, the AL ran out Nationals ace Corbin Burnes
(15-2, 1.74 ERA), who was making his second consecutive All-Star start. Last year,
Burnes tossed two perfect innings and he began the game in dominant fashion once
again, striking out Michael Brantley, Manny Machado and Yordan Alvarez.
NL manager Chris Roy gave the ball to five-time Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw
(8-0, 1.77 ERA), who was making his second career All-Star start. Kershaw has a
checkered All-Star history having allowed seven runs in eight previous innings and
he would fail to escape the first inning in this contest. After Bryan Reynolds
struck out, Aaron Judge, who reached the break with 32 home runs, bashed a mammoth
480-foot home run into the upper deck in left field at Rainier Stadium. "To be
honest, I don't think I got all of it," Judge said. "I thought it might clear the
roof and land in the middle of the fish market at Pike Place, but I guess it only
made it to the Starbucks. That's the original Starbucks, you know."
Paul Goldschmidt then doubled, Nolan Arenado singled and Bryce Harper just missed
a home run, settling for a sac fly to the warning track. That was it for Kershaw,
as Sandy Alcantara came in to get the third out. "Yeah, I challenged Judge with a
fastball," Kershaw said. "Full count, All-Star Game, I'm not going to throw a
curveball there and walk him. I'm challenging him. And I guess he got all of it."
Burnes came out for a second inning and had an easy 1-2-3 frame, giving him another
perfect All-Star outing. Guardians ace Justin Verlander entered in the third, but
George Springer greeted him with a home run to center to make it 2-1. The AL
responded in the bottom of the frame against Shane Bieber. Judge and Goldschmidt
singled with one out and Arenado lined an RBI double to left-center while Harper
followed with an RBI groundout to make it 4-1.
The National League battled back, however, as Machado homered off Nestor Cortes
in the fourth and Mike Trout -- receiving a standing ovation from his former home
crowd in Seattle, before he left for Pittsburgh in the controversial franchise
shift -- homered off Alek Manoah in the sixth to make it 4-3. Max Scherzer kept
the NL in the game with two perfect innings in the fifth and sixth.
The AL had pinch-hit Shohei Ohtani in the bottom of the sixth and he entered to
pitch in the seventh -- but the AL lost its DH in the process. "To be honest, I
wasn't too concerned with that," AL skipper Dave Schoenfield said. "I got to the
seventh with the lead and my plan was coming to perfect fruition: Ohtani in the
seventh and then the Diaz brothers to close it out."
Except Alex Bregman doubled with one out and then Trea Turner lined a game-tying
single up the middle. Suddenly, the possibility of extra innings loomed -- and
the possibility that the AL could conceivably run out of pinch-hitters. "I had
nightmares of Jim Frey," Schoenfield said, alluding to the 1981 MLB All-Star
Game when the AL trailed 5-4 in the ninth but had run out of position players
and pitcher Dave Stieb had to bat against Bruce Sutter (and struck out).
Evan Phillips kept the game tied for the NL in the bottom of the seventh and
Alexis Diaz had a dominant top of the eighth for the AL, striking out Trout and
Machado and getting Yandy Diaz to ground out. Chris Martin entered for the NL
and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. singled to lead off the inning.
Then came the shocking play of the game. With Justin Turner at the plate, Vladdy
stole second base. While Turner struck out, perhaps Martin was rattled. "I
definitely surprised him," Guerrero said. "He wasn't paying me any attention. I
think he was definitely rattled because now we had a runner in scoring position."
"I was not rattled," Martin would say.
Oakland's Arozarena dug in. Martin threw a first-pitch four-seamer that he left
over the middle of the plate and Arozarena crushed it over the wall in left-center
for a two-run home run. "I definitely got all of it," Arozarena said.
The AL wasn't done as J.T. Realmuto doubled and with two outs rookie sensation
Jeremy Pena thrilled the hometown fans with an RBI double for a 7-4 lead.
The AL brought in Liam Hendriks to begin the ninth. "I forgot about the three-
batter rule," Schoenfield admitted, knowing he wanted A's closer Edwin Diaz to
close it out. Julio Rodriguez doubled to lead off the inning and after Pete
Alonso grounded out and Martin Maldonado struck out, Diaz finally came in -- to
face CFA all-time home run leader Albert Pujols, making a final All-Star
appearance in his last season.
Pujols ran the count full and Diaz threw a hellacious, unhittable slider. Swing
and a miss. Game over. "That's why I'm retiring," Pujols laughed after the game.
Notes: AL pitchers combined for 15 K's and no walks. The CFA All-Star record is
16, set back in the first game in 2006, when AL pitchers fanned 16 (although that
game went 11 innings). ... The teams combined for five home runs, tied with 2008
and 2020 for second most in All-Star history. The AL hit five in 2021 as the
teams combined for six. ... The AL has now three straight and eight of the past
nine and leads 12-6 all time. ... Schoenfield improves to 1-1 as All-Star manager,
having lost to Shaun Wyman in the 2008 game when the NL walked it off in the
bottom of the ninth on Carlos Pena's home run off Joakim Soria (Pena's second
home run of the game). ... Jeff Daniel remains the pre-eminent All-Star manager
with a career 4-0 record. ... The only AL position player not to get in the game
was Carlos Correa. Pitchers Pablo Lopez, Julio Urias, Logan Webb and Jordan
Romano also didn't get in. ... Andres Gimenez, Ke'Bryan Hayes, Luis Robert and
Dansby Swanson went an unused among NL position players as did pitchers Cionel
Perez, Erasmo Ramirez, Erik Swanson and Zack Wheeler (who was warming up for
extra innings).
