Game 3: Oakland's Cole Hamels (8-10, 4.81) at Cleveland's Kyle Hendricks (19-5, 3.17)
As the series moves to Cleveland, the A's respond to their 2-0 series deficit with a
tiny rally in the first inning on Jose Altuve's two-out single and Anthony Rendon's RBI
double. The Tribe gets it back in the bottom half with Ronald Acuna Jr.'s leadoff single
and J.T. Realmuto's one-out triple but ground out twice to keep it 1-1. Oakland pushes
two runs across in the third, starting the inning with Mookie Betts' double, Altuve's
triple and Rendon's sacrifice fly, then adds another in the sixth on Andrew McCutchen's
sacrifice fly to make it 4-1 Oakland.
There it stood until the bottom of the eighth. Brad Hand entered in relief for Oakland
and immediately gave up Max Kepler's double and Edwin Encarnacion's homer as Cleveland
cut it to 4-3. Edwin Diaz (29 saves on the season) came on but did no better, surrendering
singles to Brian Anderson and Acuna and hitting Gleyber Torres with a pitch to load the
bases, still with no outs. After Realmuto struck out, Indians manager Jake Taylor played a
hunch and sent Dylan Carlson to pinch-hit for Hunter Renfroe (.947 OPS in 2021) and the
rookie came through, tripling to right-center to clear the bases and make it 6-4 Cleveland.
Carlos Correa singled Carlson in before Willson Contreras grounded into a double play to
end the inning, but the damage was done with Cleveland hanging a 6-run inning on Oakland's
pen. Joe Jimenez pitched a perfect ninth against Oakland's 3-4-5 hitters, striking out
two, for his second save of the series. Cleveland wins 7-4, leads series 3-0.
