Original CFA members David de la Fuente of Cleveland (99-63) and Scott McDevitt of Oakland
(91-71) met in the American League Championship Series. They had met twice before in the
playoffs, with the A's ousting Cleveland in the wild card series 3-1 in 2019 and 4-2 in the
ALDS 10 years earlier, in 2009. We've enjoyed a lot of Netplay in the 16-year history of the
league, including Travis Blackley's 1-0 no-hitter over Justin Verlander in April 2013. As
the wild-card team, Cleveland did not have home-field advantage despite the better record.

A capacity crowd at Oakland's Shibe Park greets the ALDS-winning A's as they returned home
after wrapping up their series in Montreal, and optimism was high with prohibitive Cy Young
favorite Gerrit Cole, the AL's only 20-game winner, taking the mound. Oakland gets on the
board first with a run in the second inning as Addison Russell's two-out single scored
Anthony Rendon, who had led off with a double and moved to third on Michael Conforto's
groundout. Cleveland evens it in the top of the fourth on Carlos Correa's two-out homer,
then goes ahead in the fifth on Brad Miller's leadoff single and stolen base, followed by
Brian Anderson's RBI single. The A's got runners to second base in the sixth and seventh
innings but could not score them as three Cleveland relievers allowed just a walk in 2.1
innings. Cole is solid, allowing seven hits and no walks in eight innings while striking out
eight but throws a wearying 124 pitches in the process. Cleveland wins 2-1, leads series 1-0.
