Game 1 Madison Bumgarner (12-7 3.33) vs Gerrit Cole (20-4 2.87)
Electricity was passing through the packed Shibe Park crowd in anticipation of the return
of playoff baseball. Game 1 is bringing a marquis matchup of Bumgarner vs Cole. Oakland
and Montreal had squared off in the postseason once previously, with Montreal bouncing the
Athletics back in 2014 on the strength of 2 Madison Bumgarner victories. Anthony Rendon and
Michael Conforto would kcik off the scoring in the 2nd inning with a pair of solo homers.
Kolten Wong and Trent Grisham would respond with RBI hits in the 3rd, only for Rendon to
put the Athletics ahead to stay in the bottom half of the inning with a 2 run double. Cole
tossed 6 2/3 strong and turned the game over to Ottavino, Hand and Diaz in order to close
out Game 1 5-3. Wong led the Expos in defeat with a double among 2 hits and an RBI.
