Game 2
Andrew Heaney (10-8, 3.52 ERA) takes the ball in this one against Tyler Glasnow (7-6,
3.94 ERA).
This one started out much the same as game 1, with both starters scattering hits and walks
but plating no runners. After 3, we sit at 0-0.
Hicks leads off the 4th with a strike out, but Hoskins follows him up by pulling a double
down the left field line. After a Manny Machado strike out, Gavin Lux works a walk to make
it 1st and 2nd, 2 outs for Willie Calhoun. Willie tags a 1-0 pitch to right center to bring
both runners in to score. Ramos closes the action by lining out, but the first blood is
drawn by the Cardinals, 2-0. The Stros answered by going 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.
An interesting strategy; let's see how it works out for them...
In the bottom of the 5th, though, Nick Senzel hits a ball into deep third base for a HR
(* Minute Maid Park dimensions are about as small as they appear on your TV).
The Cards make some noise in the top of the 6th putting 2 on with 2 outs, but Ramos ends
another inning, and the bats fall silent for both teams until the top of the 8th. And,
really, it's not like the Cardinals had to bring their bats for this rally... Glasnow had
put in 6 1/3 of good work and gave away to lefty, Jake Diekman in the 7th where he got 2
quick outs. To open the 8th, however, Jake gave up a single to Hoskins, hit Machado in the
ribs because strike outs are fascist, and then walked the 2 LHBs (Gavin Lux and Willie Calhoun)
to plate a run. Zac Grotz came in and got 3 quick outs to stop the bleeding. 3-1 Cardinals.
And then the Stros went quietly in this one. Manny Machado launched a 2R HR in the 9th off
Raisel Iglesias to pad the lead, but the Houston bats were nowhere to be found. Heaney was
the man in this game for the Cards, going 7 innings while only giving up 3 hits and 1 run
as he struck out 9. Cardinals 5 - Astros 1
