GAME 4: at New York’s Yankee Stadium
Justin Verlander (Indians) vs. Homer Bailey (Yankees)
After lasting only 46 pitches in Game 1, Verlander turned to his manager and said, “Give me
the ball, skip, I’m rested and ready to go!” The Yankees countered with Bailey, who was 0-2
in the Division Series, albeit in a pair of hard-luck losses. The Yankees struck first, as a
Marte leadoff home run, Wilmer Flores single and Santana two-run home run, his fourth of the
series, gave them a 3-0 early lead and had the broadcasters scrambling for their “starts on
three days’ rest” graphics. The Indians, however, immediately responded, as Bailey hit
Contreras with a pitch, then surrendered a Hunter Renfroe home run to cut the lead to 3-2.
Bailey labored from there, lasting only 3 2/3 frames while allowing five hits and four walks,
but after he departed for the showers, Darwinzon Hernandez struck out Max Kepler with runners
on first and third to keep the score right there. In the sixth, with Verlander at 105 pitches
and a man on first and one out, Joe Jimenez came in, only to surrender an RBI double to Dominic
Smith to extend the score to 4-2. The Yankees wouldn’t get another hit from there, but their
bullpen countered with scoreless fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings before handing the
ball off to closer Hader, with the dangerous Ronald Acuna Jr. and Torres two of the men
guaranteed to bat in the ninth. Torres’ two-out, solo home run narrowed the Yankees’ lead to
4-3, but Hader rebounded to strike out J.T. Realmuto on four pitches, clinching the Yankees’
second American League title in three years.

MVP: There was no clear-cut pick, as each game seemed to feature its own standout(s) — Minor
and Smith in the opener, Santana in Game 2 and Flaherty in Game 3 — but it was Game 4 star Ketel
Marte who most deserved the series’ honor. He was the only Yankee with a hit in each game, he
batted .438 (7-for-16) with two doubles, one triple, two home runs and three walks, and he was
the catalyst for several rallies.
