GAME 5: at New York’s Yankee Stadium
Dallas Keuchel (Angels) vs. Mike Minor (Yankees)
After pitching effectively yet wildly in Game 1, Minor had greater control but lesser
command in this rematch of the series-opening starters, and a Rougned Odor first-inning
error opened the door for a three-run Angels outburst, including RBI singles by Brian
Dozier, Josh Reddick and Austin Meadows. Keuchel, unfortunately, wasn’t much better,
surrendering a pair of runs on RBI singles by Stephen Piscotty and Flores in the bottom
of the frame. Fortunately, both starters settled down somewhat over the next five frames,
turning this burgeoning slugfest into another tight, close affair. An Abreu third-inning
homer extended the Angels’ lead to 4-2, and after a Seager homer cut the Angels’ lead to
one in the bottom of the sixth inning, it was time for the bullpens to take over. Tommy
Kahnle, Darwinzon Hernandez and May tossed scoreless seventh and eighth innings for the
Yankees, but Ottavino wasn’t as sharp in this game, surrendering back-to-back home runs
to Wieters and Marte to open the bottom of the seventh, giving the Yankees a 5-4 lead.
Wieters added a second homer — a two-run bomb and his third homer of the series — off
Kennedy in the eighth, important insurance runs considering Mike Moustakas hit a solo
homer of his own off Josh Hader in the ninth to bring us to our 7-5 final. Back to The
Big A we went, the Yankees up, 3-2, in the series.
