Game 4, at Chicago: Kyle Hendricks (14-8, 5.07) at Brett Anderson (10-6, 5.22)
Look at those ERAs, should be some fireworks in Chicago today, huh? That's how the game
started, with a solo home run in the top of the first from Gleyber Torres, then a two-run
double from Albies in the bottom of the first -- meaning the White Sox led in three of
the four games so far. Brian Anderson hit a solo homer in the top of the second to tie it
2-2. And that's where it stayed for some time despite multiple chances with runners in
scoring position for both teams, with Anderson getting an early hook in the fourth and
Eloy Jimenez thrown out at home in the fifth. In the top of the eighth Contreras reached
on a two-base error by Chicago third baseman Justin Turner, then a single by Anderson
scored pinch-runner Mike Freeman. The White Sox's masterful yet patchwork bullpen finally
cracked in the ninth, getting a double play to seemingly put things to rest before a walk
and three singles plated two more runs to make it Cleveland 5-2. After three saves in three
games Vazquez was fatigued, with Kyle Ryan and rookie Yoan Lopez each putting a runner on
base to bring the tying run to the plate before Lopez struck out Kike Hernandez.
Indians 5, White Sox 2. W: J. Jimenez. L: Morin. S: Y. Lopez. GW: Anderson
Congratulations to the White Sox on a successful season. A sweep was pretty much the last
thing on the Indians' minds after losing the season series 8-6, but we're happy with it,
especially now that we'll be facing the Yankees coming off seven games. In the universal
sim owner's lament, Scott Ryan said afterward, "I just wish we had put up a better fight."
With three one-run games and the finale much closer than the score, this series could
easily have gone the other way, or we'd be tied 2-2 and still playing. And I'd be fine
with that, because Scott is a fun opponent and always gets the very most out of his roster,
and that deserves tons of respect. He certainly put together a championship contender, but
your players also have to come through -- if my math is right, the White Sox batted .152
for the series (19-for-125). Can't do much with that. Indians weren't much better at .210,
but that looks positively Ruthian by comparison.
