Game 2, at Cleveland: Chris Bassitt (11-10, 4.41) vs. Brad Keller (12-9, 3.76)
There would be no pitchers' duel in Game 2 as White Sox DH Shohei Ohtani, the second
batter of the game, hit a solo homer. Cleveland responded with some smallball in the
bottom of the inning to plate two, on Kepler's single and Encarnacion's groundout. Curt
Casali hit a two-run homer in the second to put the White Sox back on top 3-2.
Cleveland tied it in the bottom of the fourth on two-out walks to Contreras and Anderson
before possibly the CFA's most dangerous No. 9 hitter, Carlos Correa, singled in Contreras,
who scored on a close play at the plate. Chicago took the lead back in the fifth, 4-3, as
Ohtani tripled in Turner, who had been hit by a pitch (again). The Tribe tried to respond
in the bottom of the fifth, but Encarnacion could not score Realmuto, who had tripled with
two outs. They did tie it 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth, as Ronald Acuna Jr. greeted
reliever Dylan Floro with a single to score Brian Anderson from second -- an inning where
the White Sox nearly had double plays twice to quell any budding threats.
Still 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth, Anderson led off with a double against new reliever
Alex Colome. Correa struck out before Acuna singled Anderson to third. With the powerful
Gleyber Torres at bat, manager Taylor called for a suicide squeeze, Anderson charged home,
and with first baseman Hernandez's only play at first, the Indians led 5-4 as Kepler popped
out to end the threat. Vazquez came on to try for his second save in two days and got it,
allowing a leadoff single to Simmons but retiring the next three, including dangerous
righty pinch-hitters Pina and Cuthbert. Little margin for error in these two games, and
the breaks in critical situations have gone Cleveland's way in taking a 2-0 series lead.
