Game 5
Milwaukee manager Bob Uecker tapped Gio Gonzalez for the pivotal game against Max
Scherzer and the never say die defending world champion Padres. San Diego gets a couple
of unearned runs early as Scherzer scores Russ Martin with a 2 out double in the 2nd
and Longoria doubles in Blackmon in the 3rd (both runners reached on Urshela errors),
getting thrown out by Tommy La Stella trying to take 3rd. But Gio walks Gamel and Ueck
has seen enough. Crichton comes in and settles things down but the Brewers are now
looking at a 2 run deficit. But in the bottom of the 5th La Stella grounds one up the
middle with two outs and Springer grounds a tough one that Ahmed can't turn into an out
anywhere, and a Belt double later we're all tied at 2. Scherzer is pulled after 6, Workman
enters and walks McCann and Giancarlo Stanton. La Stella lines a bunt into Votto's glove
(avoiding the DP in the process I guess) but Springer hits one deep down the line that
doesn't care if you're in scoring position or not and the Brewers take a 3 run lead in the
once again lucky 7th inning. Gardner knocks one out off of Martin in the 8th to draw a
run closer. Chapman finishes the 8th but then gives up a walk to Votto sandwiched between
two outs in the 9th. Ahmed then pokes a single through the infield, bringing Blackmon to
the plate as the winning run. But Chapman is up to the task and strikes him out, sending
the Brewers to Philly for cheesesteaks, drunk fights with Gritty and the NLDS.
Brewers win 5-3. Martin gets the win, Workman gets a loss he'll probably think about and
Chapman gets his first save of the series. Brewers win the series 3-2.
I chose co-MVPs. Brian McCann hit .462/.500/.769 and was the Brewers best hitter but
George Springer was right in the middle of the biggest moments and had 5 runs and 5 RBI.
For the Padres Evan Longoria was the best hitter but he also ran into a couple of outs
on the bases. Greg Garcia gave me trouble all series and hit .364/.417/.545 with 4 runs
scored.
For the wackiest line of the series J.D. Davis struck out 13 times in 20 PAs but only
made two outs on his balls in play with 3 singles, a HR and a BB in his other 7 PAs. It
wasn't that productive a series but I like that my clean up hitter stayed out of the
double play I guess.
Congratulations to Mark on another great season, he put together a deep veteran team
that pushed me really hard but the flag will be flying somewhere else this year. Maybe
Milwaukee? You never know I guess. -- Greg Donaldson
