Game 5: Back to St. Louis for the deciding game 5 with the Reds riding the momentum of
the last two games. Cardinals ace Jake Arrieta back on the mound to face the Reds’
Robbie Ray. In a moment of déjà vu the Reds score 4 runs off of Arrieta in the first
inning. At this point things looked very bleak for the Cardinals and as each inning passed
the 4 run lead loomed larger and larger. Finally in the 7th Curt Casali hit a pinch hit
2-run bomb to bring it within striking distance. In the bottom of the 8th the Cards have
2 men on, Machado doubles in a run, followed by Spangenberg doubling in 2 more to give
the Cardinals the lead. Bottom of the 9th and Tony Watson puts the tying run on first
giving up a single to Lowrie. De Jesus grounds into a double play and Lagares grounds out
to short. Giving the Cardinals the 3-2 series win.
Right to the final moment it was a dog fight and the Reds could have, and perhaps should
have, won this series. Congrats to Dave on one heck of a run with the Reds this season,
bouncing back to 102 wins after a few down years.
Reds MVP, Robbie Ray had a heck of a series but his contribution didn’t factor into any
wins. I’d probably say Joey Votto -- .400 OBP, 3 runs, and a factor at many key points
in the series.
Cardinals MVP, Freddie Freeman hit well .500, 4R, 2HR, 4RBI, but I’d say Manny Machado.
As with Votto, Machado (6 hits, 4 runs) was clutch in various moments throughout the
series.
