Game 6: Madison Bumgarner vs. Julio Teheran
Les Expos started off the scoring early again, with Leonys Martin scoring in the top
of the first off of a Julio Teheran balk. Bumgarner, batting eighth, helped his own
cause in the second with a sacrifice bunt that scored Ben Zobrist. He was further
helped when the very next batter, shortstop Brandon Crawford homered deep to right to
give the Expos a commanding 4-run lead!
Leading 4-0 with ace Madison Bumgarner on the mound should be enough to guarantee
Montreal the victory, right? Guess again. Yoenis Cespedes started off the scoring for
Milwaukee with a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 5th. Add a Gordon Beckham RBI and
the game was 4-3 after 5. Brandon Belt took Bumgarner deep the very next inning,
completing the comeback and creating a whole new ballgame after 6!
With both starters having exited, the game became a battle of bullpens from the 7th
inning on. Sound familiar? It should. The 7th inning was completely scoreless, but
the 8th was a bit interesting. Kevin Quackenbush (who had pitched a scoreless, 12-pitch
7th) stayed in to face the top of the Expos lineup. It proved to be a mistake.
Leonys Martin slapped a single between first and second, and that is when the drama
really ensued. Greg thought long and hard about bringing in Aroldis Chapman, but elected
to leave the right-handed Quackenbush in to face the right-handed Lorenzo Cain. But
before that pitcher/hitter battle, was the battle between Quackenbush and the baserunner,
Martin.
I would like to point out that throughout the series, Greg was absolutely paranoid about
Expos baserunners. He would throw over to first or run a pitchout frequently. This battle,
however, was even more intense, and quite possibly the most epic pitcher/baserunner
encounter I’ve ever been a part of. After 1 pitchout and 5 throws over to first, and a 2-0
count, I finally gave Martin the green light to steal. The throw from Ianetta was on the
money, but Martin had gotten such a good jump he just managed to touch the base ahead of
the throw. Safe!
Now what does Lorenzo Cain do with nobody out and the go-ahead run is in scoring position?
He launches a line drive down the right field line! Giancarlo Stanton dives, but he can’t
get to it. Martin scores with ease, and Cain ends up standing on third base. Chapman
finally enters the game to face Edwin Encarnacion, who hits a fly ball to right field.
Lorenzo Cain (Ex running) tags up, and Stanton (Ex throw) prepares the cannon and fires
an absolute strike to the plate! The ball is caught cleanly, but Cain is just able to
slide around the tag. Safe! That’s what speed do. Les Expos lead 6-4.
Josh Collmenter threw a clean bottom of the 8th – his second clean inning in a row.
Chapman stays in and shuts the Expos down in the top of the 9th, and Montreal’s Sean
Doolittle enters in the 9th to seal the game – and the World Series. Doolittle is so
amped on adrenaline at this point that he strikes out the side on 9 pitches! The Expos
win, and are the first back-to-back champions in CFA history!!!
Expos 6, Brewers 4. Montreal wins 4-2.
For World Series MVP, I’d definitely have to go with ALCS MVP CF Leonys Martin. As the
Mariners before, the Brewers simply could not get Martin out. He had a .368/.478/474
slash line with 6 runs scored, and 1-0 on SB attempts, the epic 8th inning of Game 6.
Good for him. He’s going to be very shocked when he gets non-tendered later this month,
but at least he can load up all his stuff in his brand new Chevy Camaro…
Thanks to Greg for working around my schedule and netplaying a very fun, thrilling series.
Some very fortunate base running and defensive plays, as well as some timely hitting
helped the Expos get past a 120-win juggernaut somehow.
Back-to-back champions. Wow. The wild ride continues for another year!
