Game 7@MIL: This one was for all of the marbles, as Corey Kluber took the mound for the
3rd time against David Price for the Brewers. It was the Dodgers on the board first yet
again, as Cliff Pennington followed a Neil Walker single with one of his own, with both
of them moving up a base when Giancarlo Stanton mishandled it. Brian McCann knocked them
both in with a single up the middle to give L.A. an early 2-0 lead.
Things stayed quiet until the 6th, with both teams wasting a couple of baserunners. But
in the bottom of the 6th Joe Mauer hit an double to the opposite field that drove Kluber
from the game. Zach Duke entered and struck out Danny Santana but let Yoenis Cespedes get
away, walking him to bring Giancarlo Stanton to the plate as the go-ahead run with 1 out
and getting pulled for Joe Smith in the process.
Smith got two quick strikes on Stanton, who was undoubtedly thinking of atoning for his
2nd inning error. With the Milwaukee faithful beginning to chant "MVP!" Stanton watched
a pitch in the dirt for ball 1 and then exploded, turning on a high fastball deep, deep
to left and way outta here, bouncing off of Bernie's slide and putting the Brewers up for
the first time in a while.
Both bullpens battled through the next couple of innings and pretty soon it was the 9th
inning, with the Brewers 3 outs away from the World Series and the Dodgers looking to crack
Aroldis Chapman for the first time all series. Pinch hitter Zach Walters couldn't do it
despite looking very scary, and Neil Walker's fly ball to right didn't have quite enough
juice either. But Hank Conger walked on 6 pitches and so did Brian McCann, bringing Marcus
Semien to the plate looking to do what no one has ever done before.
But the big Cuban was up to the task, burying Semien with a knee high fastball for strike
3 and rushing to meet Brayan Pena's arms to celebrate their return to the World Series
after a year away.
Danny Duffy got the win in relief for Milwaukee and Joe Smith was saddled with the loss.
Brewers win 3-2. Milwaukee wins series 4-3
Series MVP was a tough choice. I almost went with Adam Eaton, who hit .533/.563/.867 with
16 hits in a losing cause. He definitely had the best series but I went with Aroldis
Chapman, who didn't allow a hit in 4.1 innings while winning one game and saving two. The
entire Milwaukee bullpen was excellent, throwing 23.2 scoreless innings to save a team
whose usually strong starting rotation just wasn't up to the task this time.
Congratulations to Bill on a fantastic season and an incredibly fun series, he almost got
me good. But in the end it's going to be the Brewers in the World Series trying to keep
the Expos from repeating. Chug the Beast!
