Game 2: Hammel vs. Lohse
Bit of a grudge match in this one. If you don’t remember, Hammel started out last season
in the Expos rotation but didn’t get to enjoy the bubbly on the post-season run. That’s
because he was traded mid-season for Anthony Swarzak and a cardboard cut-out of Erik Bedard
after nearly single-handedly sabotaging that championship season by going 3-10 with a 6.44
ERA over 16 first-half starts. Now here he is in Montreal with his Mariner teammates,
starting in Game 2 and showing off his new team like your crazy ex-girlfriend shows off her
brand new boyfriend who’s taller and richer than you are by somehow showing up in all your
favorite spots just 1 week after you dumped her. That bitch. Anyway, Hammel had his way,
allowing 0 runs and only 3 baserunners over 7 innings before exiting in the bottom of the
8th. Meanwhile, the Mariners offense came alive. Seattle managed only 7 hits, but 4 of
those left yard, pushing them to a 5-0 lead. The Expos rallied a bit in the 8th to come to
within 2 runs, but that rally only succeeded in raising Dusty’s blood pressure somewhat.

At this point I remarked that the series was probably headed to 7 games. Mariners had won
the first 2 games, but were now returning home where their offensive power might be a bit
suppressed, and there was plenty of OF acreage in which Leonys Martin and Lorenzo Cain
might roam. A bit of a home-field disadvantage, if you ask me.
