Game 5@OAK: Facing elimination things start out shaky for the Brewers as Cespedes
pulls up lame after making the 3rd out and has to be removed from the game. They once
again score first though, loading the bases in the 2nd against Beachy for an infield
single by McKenry and a walk to Belt, producing a 2-0 lead. They get two more in the
3rd on a Stanton HR deep down the line and Darvish is looking so far like that might
be all he needs. The As get one back in the bottom of the inning though as they take
Darvish deep again, this time Keppinger. Things are relatively quiet until the 5th
when the As once again play longball, with Barmes hooking a solo shot down the line.
Knowing there might be no tomorrow but knowing that the bullpen will be needed in the
longer term if this series is to be winnable and wanting to stick with their best
Milwaukee stays with Darvish, but Oakland makes them pay the price for this, tying the
game in the 6th on 3 doubles by Beltre, Morales and Wieters. Still under 100 pitches
and still missing bats with 12 Ks, Darvish starts the 7th but Maybin reaches on a bloop
single and a wild pitch from Yu puts him in scoring position. Keppinger grounds out to
Darvish but Maybin advances to 3rd on the play, and Milwaukee can see its season
crumbling with Oakland's 2-3-4 hitters coming to the plate. Knowing from his experiences
striking out as a hitter that this is one of those times where you really need a K,
manager Uecker calls in Chapman. What, you were expecting Mr. Belvedere?
The big Cuban comes through in the clutch, whiffing Alonso on a slider just above the
dirt and following it up by finishing off McCutchen on three pitches, keeping the game
tied. It stays that way until the 9th, when Cedeno reaches on a single and Beckham beats
out a bunt, putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Ransom undoes that good fortune by forcing
Cedeno at 3rd on his sac bunt attempt though, and Affeldt enters to face Belt and Mauer.
Belt pounds one into the ground in front of Keppinger but hustles his bony ass down the
line and beats out the double play relay, keeping the inning alive. And Mauer rewards
the Brewers for it, dropping a single in front of McCutchen to score Beckham and push
Belt to 3rd. Reimold steps in, having entered the game for Hairston in LF when Oakland
tied it up, and smashes a 2 strike pitch down the line, landing about 10 rows deep in
the seats and giving the Brewers a cushion they might need with Chapman tired and unable
to finish. But Lyon gets the job done anyway and the Brewers stay alive as both teams
hop on planes back to Milwaukee and start preparing for the final chapter on Sunday.
