Game 5 at MIN: Again the Mariners lead early, scratching for two runs in each of the second
and third innings including a homer from Butler, a bases-loaded walk from Trout, and two(!)
run-scoring singles from Punto(!!). Up 4-0, Gallardo gives it all back and more, with Rizzo,
Pence and Granderson going back to back to back in the third to take a 5-4 lead. Mariners are
spent after that, with Granderson adding a run-scoring hit and Ruggiano two of them, and
Minnesota wins 8-5 to grab the series and head to Chicago to face their bitter Central
rivals, the White Sox. MIN 8-4, MIN wins series 3-2.
"Neither team ever gave up and there were many exciting moments," says Twins owner Keith
Lipscomb. Mariners owner Dusty Bloomingheart showed all class in defeat, replying, "More
specifically, the Curtis Granderson Show. ... Awesome, fun series."
Butler (.409) and Granderson each hit three homers, Rizzo and Pence two each. Other than
MIN leading 8-5 in homers, teams were evenly matched: MIN led 30-27 in runs, .271-263 in BA,
5.17-5.28 in ERA.
