Game 5: Tommy Hanson vs. Jaime Garcia. Garcia gets his first start of the series while
Hanson his second. Tommy is rattled early after his early error leads to a run in the 1st
inning. But he would settle down. Garcia escapes a bases loaded no-out jam in the 3rd by
only allowing 1 run on a Jon Jay sac fly (batting for an injured Matt Holliday).
The M's take the lead in the 5th as Konerko stays hot and singles in Jose Tabata, nearly
chasing Hanson from the game (third straight hit to start the inning). The Nats eventually
tie it in the 6th when a 2-out rally including an Alexei Ramirez RBI single barely scores
"the quick Wes Helms" from second base.
Hanson starts the 7th inning knowing he is walking out on the mound only to face Konerko
before giving way to the warming Thornton to face the tough lefties in the middle of the
lineup. Konerko promptly hits the 3-1 pitch deep over the left center field wall to give
the M's another 1-run lead.
Thornton gets in and out of a little bit of further trouble in the 7th. Jose Contreras and
Grant Balfour lock down the mound the rest of the way as only a Jonathan Herrera 2-out
single in the 8th was the only blemish. SEA 3, WAS 2.
The series heads back to Washington to see if the M's can continue the comeback or if the
Nats can win one of the next two and get to the World Series.
