Game 5, WAS@CLE: Both teams turn to their Game 1 starters, 23-game winner Tommy Hanson
for Washington and 16-game winner Clay Buchholz for Cleveland. Buchholz, feeling some
pressure, gives up two quick runs on Jon Jay's single, Shin-Soo Choo's triple and Scott
Rolen's fielder's choice grounder (Choo safe on the throw home). Buchholz allows another
single, then suffers a back strain and is forced to leave the game. Bruce Chen is brought
in and limits the damage to another run, and Cleveland gets a run in the bottom of the
inning on Jose Reyes' solo homer to cut it to 3-1. Chen guts it out for 5.2 scoreless
innings and 81 pitches, but Cleveland barely threatens in the next few innings. In the top
of the ninth with the score still 3-1, Indians reliever Jose Valverde gets two quick
groundouts, then two groundball singles. Game 4 closer John Axford is brought in but
allows a run-scoring liner to Adam LaRoche, then leaves for an injury himself. Down 4-1,
Reyes, Prince Fielder and Evan Longoria go meekly in the ninth and the Tribe heads home
for the winter, hoping that the injuries to Buchholz and Axford don't linger into 2012
and endanger another potential playoff run. Final: WAS 4, CLE 1, Nats win series 4-1.
