In a desperate move, the Yankees looked into the opposing dugout, saw a slew of
left-handers and told old man Jamie Moyer, "Hey, keep us in this one, OK?" Moyer,
unfortunately, was not up to the task, as a Ross Gload error and Adam Lind three-run
homer in the third put the Royals up, 3-1. Chan Ho Park, however, was; he went three
shutout innings of relief to keep the Yankees in the game. Unfortunately, Padilla, and
George Sherrill after that, matched Park pitch for pitch until the eighth, when, with
two outs, Chone Figgins and Derek Jeter hit back-to-back singles and Mark Teixeira
homered into the right-field stands for a 4-3 Yankee lead. (This, incidentally, was a
far more promising result than a previous first-and-third situation for Teixeira in the
fifth, when he lined out to third and Figgins was doubled off third.) But, called upon
for a five-out save, Rafael Soriano served up a game-tying, pinch-hit homer to Mike
Fontenot in the ninth, sending the game to extras, where the Royals and Yankees posted
doughnuts in the 10th. Royals closer Jose Valverde, working his second inning, served
up a leadoff single to Delmon Young in the 11th, and two batters later, Jacoby Ellsbury's
deep drive to center plated Young for a Yankee win and a tie of the series, 3-3. We'll
go seven, fellas!
