With Colorado Rockies owner Mike Sargent under the weather, Greg Gibeault of the St.
Louis Cardinals stepped up to lead the National League in the annual CFA All-Star Game
on Tuesday afternoon. Here's how our Midsummer Classic matchup went!
National League starting pitcher Walker Buehler began the game with a trio of strikeouts,
but the second inning didn't go quite so smoothly, as Aaron Judge hit a leadoff home run
and Marcus Semien followed with a solo shot of his own two innings later. That gave
American League starter Gerrit Cole a two-run lead, and the Oakland Athletics right-hander
turned in two scoreless frames to get his team off to a good start.
With Max Scherzer on the mound for the NL to begin the fourth inning, the AL got back-to-
back singles by Judge and Bryce Harper, leading to Nick Anderson coming on in relief of
Scherzer. Harper stole second base on the first pitch, and after a throwing error by NL
catcher Yasmani Grandal, Judge scored and Harper advanced to third base, where he'd be
promptly be driven home by a Semien single. The AL would load the bases from there, but
fortunately the score remained 4-0 after Ronald Acuna Jr. struck out to conclude the frame.
The NL got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Nelson Cruz's solo home run
off Justin Verlander cut the AL's lead to 4-1.
The AL immediately responded with two more runs in the fifth inning, as Jose Altuve greeted
NL reliever Zack Greinke with a leadoff triple, scoring on Mookie Betts' ground out, and
Shohei Ohtani, a pinch-hitter for Harper, scored on a Semien single after reaching base via
a double. The AL would then extend its lead to 9-1 in the sixth inning, when A.J. Pollock,
pinch-hitting for Acuna, hit a two-run home run off NL reliever Andrew Heaney.
The NL mounted its best challenge in the bottom of that sixth inning, when against AL
reliever Zac Gallen, it loaded the bases on back-to-back infield singles by Yuli Gurriel
and Juan Soto and a walk by Manny Machado. The AL summoned Edwin Diaz after the Machado
free pass, however, and Diaz struck out Jose Ramirez to shut down the NL rally and keep
it 9-1.
Mike Trout of the NL was the only player to get as far as second base in the seventh or
eighth innings, as he doubled off Diego Castillo with one out in the seventh. The AL had some
fun in the eighth, meanwhile, as Ohtani, who had come on as the DH replacing Harper in the
fifth, shifted to the mound to pitch a scoreless eighth inning, with his team forfeiting the
designated hitter for the remainder of the contest.
In the top of the ninth inning, Michael Conforto homered off Liam Hendriks to extend the AL's
lead to 10-1, and the team got two baserunners on with two outs, forcing the NL to turn to
Kirby Yates to prevent further damage.
Josh Hader was assigned the AL's final frame, and after surrendering an Alex Bregman leadoff
double, Hader struck out Joey Votto, Trout and pinch hitter Pete Alonso to nail down the AL's
10-1 victory.
MVP: One could go with any of Judge, Semien or Cole and have picked the “right guy,” but
Semien was my choice, being that he plated runs with hits in each of his three trips to the
plate, including the second-inning homer that put the AL ahead by two runs.
