2020 CFA All-Star Game

Scott Ryan of the American League Champion Chicago White Sox and Mark Slann of the San Diego Padres
took charge of the AL and NL All-Stars on Saturday afternoon. With a potential World Series home-
field advantage at stake (and revenge on Scott’s mind) the game started out with an expert display
of pitching.
Starters Shane Bieber and Mike Minor gave up nothing in inning 1, and the deadlock continued through
innings 2 and 3. Clevinger keeps the run going for the NL in the top of the 4th, but the breakthrough
comes for the NL in the bottom of the inning. After Bregman grounds out, up comes hometown hero Cody
Bellinger, who takes Taylor Rogers deep with a solo shot. NL goes up 1-0.
A quiet 5th inning and we move to the top of the 6th. Luis Castillo takes the mound and almost
immediately gets into trouble. After Yastrzemski strikes out, Omar Narvaez hits a double and the wily
AL manager brings in Danny Santana to pinch run. Austin Meadows lines a single that moves Santana over
to 3rd and Castillo throws a wild pitch that moves Meadows over to 2nd. Castillo then walks MVP
candidate Ketel Marte (if you haven’t seen this guys numbers go check it out) and the NL manager has
seen enough. In comes Aroldis Chapman and the AL counters by bringing Jose Altuve to the plate. What was
that noise? Just the sound of an inning ending double play. The NL escapes with the bases loaded.
Osuna comes in to pitch for the AL in the bottom of the inning and walks Charlie Blackmon. Tim Anderson
flies out and back up is LADs own Cody Bellinger who has the only score of the game on his homer in
inning 4. CRACK. Make that TWO homers. Another shot deep right and the hometown crowd is going crazy for
Cody. The NL goes up 3-0. Hansel Robles replaces Osuna on the mound and up steps Mike Trout for his first
at bat of the game. BOOM. Home run and its 4-0 for the NL.
Top of the 7th and the AL brings in JD Martinez at DH and he smashes a home run deep left off of
Chapman. Walker Buehler comes up to pitch for the NL All Stars in his home park but is yanked after
singles from Semien and Max Kepler. With two outs and two on base, Zach Greinke gets the NL out of
trouble.
The AL get another runner on in the top of the 8th but cannot capitalize. Bottom of the inning and
after a Tim Anderson single, up steps Mike Trout again. Same result. HOME RUN. The NL go up 6-1. Stephen
Strasburg closes it out in the top of the 9th and the NL wins it.
Would have been a different story if the AL had been able to capitalize, they left 6 on base. AL also
had one more hit than the NL (7-6) but the pitching early on was probably the difference. Being able
to roll out the likes of Bieber, Corbin, deGrom, Clevinger and Scherzer in the early innings was a huge
factor for the NL.
Apologies to Chris Sale and Brandon Workman, the only two players that didn’t get some action for the
NL in the end.
MVP: Cody Bellinger.
Could almost be a joint award considering Bellinger and Trout each had 2 HRs and 3 RBIs for the game,
but given the park, the hometown guy edges it. Bellinger made the breakthrough in 4th and put the NL up
3-0 with his second homer. Some excellent pitching early on too.
For what its worth, Mike Clevinger credited with the W, Taylor Rogers took the L and Strasburg got the
Save.

PS – for the eagle-eyed amongst you…yes Laureano did end up closing the game at Catcher. Let’s just go
