After Chris Carpenter threw only 99 pitches in a disastrous performance in the series
opener, the Yankees showed some confidence in their ace by sending him to the mound
on three days' rest in an attempt to take command of the series. It was the right
decision: Carpenter was brilliant. He needed just 75 pitches to complete eight innings
of two-run, six-hit baseball, while wild Royals closer Jose Valverde's three walks and
Derek Jeter's home run off Bobby Jenks helped give the Yankees a 5-2 lead entering the
bottom of the ninth. Unfortunately, this story didn't have a happy ending for Carpenter:
Given a chance to complete the game, he allowed a Nick Johnson walk and Juan Uribe homer
to shave the lead to 4-2. Then, Yankees relievers Dan Meyer and Rafael Soriano -- a
rock-solid regular-season closer -- combined to serve up three walks and two hits,
including Brooks Conrad's pinch-hit, RBI single, as the Royals rallied to tie the series.
